Introduction

In conjunction with the 39th Anniversary of Universitas Terbuka, Faculty of Science and Technology will held the 3rd International Seminar of Sciences and Technology (ISST) 2023. ISST is supported by several journals such as Jurnal Matematika, Sains, dan Teknologi; Food Scientia: Journal of Food Science and Technology; AgriDev Journal (Agribusiness Digitalization & Community Development); Reksabumi Journal of Urban, Regional, and Environmental Planning; and Manilkara: Journal of Bioscience.

The theme of the 3rd ISST 2023 is:

Trends in Science and Technology for Sustainable Living

Science and technology are ways that human beings can contribute to solve challenges in our life. Utilizing science and technology are important for human benefits. However, without taking a good care of it, it can lead to many problems or disasters for the future of our planet. The application of science and technology must be able to give value not only for humankind but also for the earth. The threat of environmental destruction, natural disasters, and exploitation of living things as well as resources are currently present in our day-to-day lives. This can be achieved by applying the ideas grounded in sustainable development within the emerging technology trends. Therefore, the talk of sustainability is now very prevalent within the scientific and industrial community.

Sustainability is strongly related to the practice of thinking about today and tomorrow. It strives to ensure that human beings and other living things can access the natural resources necessary for their survival and well-being while also providing for future generations. To accomplish this practice, countries around the world, individually and in cooperation, are moving towards a more sustainable life by utilizing research and changing current practices. Sustainable living is the practice of reducing the impact of our action by reducing carbon emission and conserving earth’s resources. Several examples include moving towards eco-friendly products, reducing excessive consumption such as with water and energy, as well as moving from unsustainable practices like fossil fuel exploitation. However, the realization of this idea proves to be a challenge as the transition towards sustainable living are possibly met with trials and tribulations. The practice of sustainable living is usually associated to the social, economic, and political issues of countries and the population living in them. Education, resources, and technological advancement play a role on the success of implementing sustainable living worldwide. Therefore, to advance in such practice, it is imperative to utilize many advancements through science and technology.

Through science and technology, sustainable living will get closer to become a common practice among human and society. Advancement in science and technology must have the goal to improve the quality of human life without disturbing the environment and social structure. Many organizations are increasingly tying together traditional sustainability efforts with mission-based work centred around a specific environmental issue or problem. The idea of sustainability can play a part in many different industries and fields of study. For instance, unsustainable practices in manufacturing industries can affect biodiversity and public and environmental health. By applying many breakthroughs in biological and environmental science, biodiversity of organisms can be conserved better for future generation. Moreover, the field of spatial planning offer sustainability of cities through environmental-based urban development. Food production can have an impact on the environment as well, through the effect of greenhouse gasses and waste. Therefore, good agricultural practices such as in pre- and post-harvest, also contributed to maintaining a sustainable living in our society. And lastly, by applying mathematics, statistics, and information technology, many current environmental issues can be analysed and managed, and future disasters can be predicted.

These days, there are many trends in science and technology that are being studied, utilized, and improved upon. With this conference, our goal is to give a scientific platform for researchers, academics, and alike to disseminate their research and ideas as well as to connect with like-minded and diverse-thinking individuals in the topic of sustainability. It is of our expectation that various trends in sustainable living, whether in the past, present, or future, will be discussed in this seminar to advance the topic of sustainable living.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the ISST are:

  1. to facilitate interaction between researchers, practitioners, and academicians in discussing current and future trends of science and technology for sustainable living, and
  2. to provide researchers, practitioners, and academicians an appropriate scientific platform to share experiences, communicate, and build a network with other experts in Indonesia and from around the world about the trends of science and technology related to sustainable living.
